From Mackie to Pro Tools…

Mackie has recently announced a licensing deal with allows their new series of Onyx i mixers to interface with Pro Tools M-Powered… This deal not only breaks digidesign’s long held to pattern of not letting any outside hardware (M-Audio is owned by Avid, who owns Digidesign)… but also opens up a whole new potential opportunity for any interface maker to get into the Pro Tools Game.

Mackie’s license with Digidesign will allow an owner of a Mackie Onyx i mixer (any of the series) to purchase a $49 “Universal Driver” and the $249 Pro Tools M-Powered software and off we go.

While this may bolster sales of the Onyx i Series for Mackie at the moment, is this a sign of Digidesign slowly letting down the long standing iron curtain they’ve put up in regards to outside manufacturers hardware on their software?
