AudioRefurb: Stand-Alone FX

audiorefurbJs8Media just released version 1.0 of their audio fx processor, AudioRefurb.

AudioRefurb is a stand-alone FX processor, to be used on single stereo audio files.

It accepts most popular formats including mp3, aac, wav, aiff, aifc, caf, and cd db files.

Now time for the processors.  Here’s what I’ve found thus far.

FX
*Bandpass*
Eliminates a band of frequencies… Center frequency control, and Bandwidth control (by Hz)
Great for eliminating one troublesome frequency in a recording (a buzz or hum)

Delay
Audio Delay, with your normal controls.  Dry/Wet, Time, Feedback (+/-), Low Pass
I’m not sure how this would be useful for stereo processing on a podcast, or music.  But hey, I like delay.

Distortion
Delay with quite a range of parameters… Including Ring Mods.
I won’t go into this farther, because, again, not sure how this is useful in a stereo processor.

*Filter*
Parametric EQ!  Normal Parameters.  Q, Gain, and Bandwidth.  3 Bands and a 4th Limited Low Band.
This is definitely useful.  For EQ’ing to get rid of troublesome frequencies, or just using it to shape the general tone of your file.

*Graphic EQ*
Graphic EQ!  Another handy tool.  Works like any typical Graphic EQ.
Same as the Filter… Used for general tones within the file, or to adjust troublesome frequencies.

*High Pass*
This Rolls off all frequencies below a certain frequency.  The Pre-Sets are all mildly useless, as well as the “resonance” control.  I would recommend turning that to -20 off the bat.
Useful to get rid of Low Frequencies that are almost always noise (below 80Hz)

High Shelf Frequency
This works as above (High Pass), but lets you choose the frequency, and any frequency above that you can control the gain of (+/-40dB)

***Peak Limiter***
All professional music and podcasts are ran through a Peak Limiter.  What it does is compresses (a hard compressor) your audio and Normalizes (brings your output to a maximum before clipping).
I will say, this is one of either a) the MOST TRANSPARENT limiters i’ve used.  or b) its a soft limiter.  I’d say A.  I like it.

Low Pass
A Low Pass filter works the same as the High Pass, except backwards.  High frequencies are cut, instead of Lows.
Good for getting rid of high frequency noise, but will get rid of the intelligable part of the human voice as well.

Low Shelf Filter
The Low Shelf Filter is the Low Frequency Boost/Cut counterpart of the High Shelf Frequency…
Works from 10-200Hz, usable as a variable High Pass  Filter.

Reverb
This is quite a full featured reverb unit, including two reverb units (Large/Small).

Once again, for any pro-audio applications, using this on a podcast or music is probably not a good idea.  Maybe a podcast, with a very short reverb just to fatten up the voices?

The Word on AudioRefurb
AudioRefurb IS Mac Only (OSX 10.5+), but outside of that limiting factor I’d definitely AudioRefurb for any podcaster or anyone doing simple, home recording.

There’s a free demo that does everything, but doesn’t export.  But the full version is only $20.

You Can Purchase AudioRefurb from JS8Media’s Website.
